The Zest Season Ever!
Citrus season has officially arrived, and we’re celebrating with fresh flavors, new varieties, and a tasting you won’t want to miss.
Winter has a funny way of asking for color and citrus always answers the call.
As the days grow shorter and the skies turn gray, our produce department starts to glow with oranges, grapefruits, lemons, mandarins, and all their vibrant cousins. Citrus season is one of our favorite times of year, when the bins fill with fruit that looks like sunshine and tastes even better.
Each winter, we partner with Organically Grown Company (OGC) to bring in an ever-changing lineup of organic citrus from California and beyond. From classic navels and juicy grapefruits to more unusual varieties that only show up for a few short weeks, this is the moment when citrus truly shines. Some are sweet and snackable, others bright and bracing, perfect for salads, baking, marmalades, cocktails, and everything in between.
“Citrus Tasting will be Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM in the Food Co-op Lobby!”
What makes citrus so special is its incredible diversity. Though all citrus traces back to just a few original ancestors, centuries of natural crossings, careful cultivation, and a little luck have given us an astonishing range of flavors, colors, and shapes. Each variety has its own personality, its own season, and its own best use in the kitchen.
Most of the organic citrus we carry comes from California, where growers take advantage of distinct growing regions, from the warm Central Valley to the mild coastal areas and the dry desert districts. Those different climates help create fruit with remarkable depth of flavor and character. OGC also sources select citrus from Texas and Mexico, extending the season and bringing us even more to explore.
To celebrate peak citrus season, from Feb 25 – March 3rd we will be offering 20% off all citrus and we’re hosting a Citrus Tasting on Saturday, February 28th from 1-4pm. It’s a chance to sample what’s in season, discover new favorites, and learn what makes each variety special.
Stop by, take a bite, and let citrus brighten your winter.
