Beans for Bags September-October: Sunfield Land for Learning

We reward people for their sustainability efforts by giving 8 cents back for each reusable bag used. You can then either keep the bag credit, OR get at bean. Get a bean, you ask? If you choose a bean (= $.08), you can choose where that money goes by dropping that bean into a jar, which represents 1 of 3 non-profits in the Jefferson County Community. Non-profits are nominated by member/owners and chosen by a committee. Two jars are rotated out bi-monthly, the third jar represents the Jefferson County Food Bank, which is supported year round.

Sunfield Land for Learning is a nonprofit organization with a broad community-building mission. Sunfield offers a Waldorf school and educational programs in sustainable land stewardship that take place on our eighty-one acres of fields, forest, and wetlands. We provide healthy, biodynamic food for the local community; currently all of Sunfield's farm produce is donated to local and regional food banks and food access programs. Our Waldorf school has a dynamic tuition assistance program that creates accessibility for students and families regardless of their ability to pay full tuition.

This season, we have had a true summer experience on the land with kids' camps of exploring seeds and soil, grains and gardens, and forests and farm animals! We have savored the food of summer and eaten snap peas, blueberries, currants, salad greens and so many scrambled chicken and duck eggs. This year also marks the return of our Sunfield Shepherds 4-H Program in this year’s Jefferson County Fair and new this year is an American Sign Language summer class for children and families.
