Ten years ago, we were proud to partner with Power Trip to offer free electric vehicle charging at the Food Co-op. At the time, electric cars were still relatively uncommon, and public charging options were limited. For many drivers, charging at home was the only practical choice, so providing this service felt like a meaningful way to support our community and encourage the adoption of cleaner transportation.

A lot has changed since then. Electric vehicles are now far more common, and drivers have many more charging options available. Charging technology has also evolved significantly. Our charger, which was installed a decade ago, is now outdated and lacks the compatibility and flexibility needed to serve many newer vehicles. In addition, a new fast-charging station has opened near Kitsap Bank on the other side of the Sims Way roundabout, giving drivers a convenient and more modern alternative.

Over the past several years, keeping our charger operational has become increasingly difficult. It is not compatible with all vehicle types, requires frequent repairs, and is currently out of service once again. Repair costs continue to rise, and the interruptions understandably lead to frustration for those who rely on it.

After careful consideration, we have decided it is time to retire and remove the charging station. While saying goodbye to a service we've proudly offered for a decade is bittersweet, we believe this is the right decision given the availability of newer and more reliable charging options in our community.
