Join Us for Plastic Free July!

By Kenna Eaton, GM

Plastic Free July is a global initiative that challenges everyone to reduce their plastic waste. Since its start in Australia in 2011, it has grown to include millions of participants worldwide—raising awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastics on our environment.

While this may not be new to you, we hope it inspires a fresh look at how deeply we rely on plastic—a petroleum-based product that often ends up in our water, food, and even our bodies.

Our Store’s Journey

Last year, we removed all plastic bags and containers from our bulk room. It was a bold move that got people thinking—about convenience, usefulness, and just how much we depend on plastic. Not everyone was happy with the change (one shopper even threatened to stop coming!), but it sparked meaningful conversations.

This year, as we continue recovering from the UNFI disruption, we’ve chosen a more gradual approach. While we’re not removing plastic entirely this month, we’re still promoting the Plastic Free July message through in-store signage, social media, and displays.

How You Can Participate

·         Bring your own containers and bags—we’ll even reward you with a bean for every five reused sacks or jars!

·         Take advantage of our Jar Savers program, offering sanitized, reused glass jars.

·         Plan ahead before shopping to make plastic-free choices easier.

We know it’s not always easy to do the right thing without the right tools—but we believe in you. Let’s all take a moment to reflect on our plastic use and explore how we can do better, together.
