Behind Your Morning Coffee: The Power of Fair Trade and Cooperation

Your morning cup of coffee has a story that begins long before the beans reach your mug. For many coffee farmers, growing a good crop is only part of the challenge. Getting a fair price, supporting their families, and building a sustainable future can take a whole community working together.

That’s where fair trade and cooperatives come in. When farmers have the support of a cooperative and access to fair trade premiums, they can do more than grow great coffee. They can invest in their farms, create opportunities for the next generation, and build stronger, healthier communities.

What does that look like in real life? Meet Gerardo Goicochea, a coffee farmer in the mountains of northeastern Peru and a founding member of the Sol & Café Farmers’ Cooperative. His journey from struggling to receive a fair price for his coffee to helping build a thriving cooperative is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together.

In this guest article from our friends at Willy Street Co-op and Equal Exchange, you’ll hear Gerardo’s story in his own words and discover how fair trade and cooperation are helping shape a more equitable and sustainable coffee system.

The next time you brew a cup of coffee, take a moment to think about the farmers behind it. Every cup connects us to a much bigger story—one rooted in people, community, and the future of our food system.
