Beans for Bags

In 2023 Beans for Bags generated over $20,000 to local Non-Profits

We reward people for their sustainability efforts by giving 8 cents back for each reusable bag used. You can then either keep the bag credit, OR get at bean.   Get a bean, you ask?  If you choose a bean (= $.08), you can choose where that money goes by dropping that bean into a jar, which represents 1 of 3 non-profits in the Jefferson County Community.   Non-profits are nominated by member/owners and chosen by a committee.  Two jars are rotated out bi-monthly, the third jar represents the Jefferson County Food Bank, which is supported year round.

Nominate Your Favorite Non-Profit!

One of the many perks of being a Food Co-op member is that you can be a part of giving back to the community in a variety of ways. One way is by nominating your favorite Jefferson County non-profit to receive funds from our Beans for Bags program. Nomination forms will be available online here October 1st-November 30th for the following year.

Beans for Bags Process

October/November: Beans for Bags nominations open for 2025.  Nominations are only accepted through online form here. If you need, Customer Service can help you use the computer in the store.
Early December: Board Community Engagement Committee will meet to vote on the 2025 recipients. 
Late December: 2025 recipients announced

Heartberries is an all outdoors program for children ages 2-5 based at Peace Hill and Shy Acre Farm in Port Townsend, Washington.  We seek to provide affordable care that is nature immersive, multi-cultural, cultivates the imagination, and encourages children's natural inclinations towards love and kindness.

July/August Beans For Bags Spotlight: Community Build – Housing Builds Community

Community Build built three temporary supervised villages in Jefferson County starting with Peter's Place in Port Hadlock in 2020. This was followed by Pat's Place in Port Townsend, and we have built 20 tiny shelters for OlyCAP at Caswell-Brown off Mill Road. These facilities have housed over 75 residents over the last 3 years. We are so proud of this accomplishment!
